Frequently Asked Question:

Copra, the dried form of coconut flesh, stands as a cornerstone in coconut derivative production, serving as the primary raw material for the creation of coconut oil and its derivatives. Its significance lies not only in the extraction of valuable oils but also in its role as a nutritious by-product.

The production of superior copra necessitates coconuts of approximately 300 days, weighing between 3-4 kg. Following the extraction of copra oil, a by-product rich in protein (18-25%) but indigestible fiber remains. This by-product finds purpose as livestock feed due to its nutritional composition.

Copra processing encompasses four techniques: sun drying, smoke curing or drying, and indirect heating. Each method contributes to the preservation of copra quality, ensuring optimal water content ranging from 6% to 7% and mitigating susceptibility to pest organisms.

Traditionally, copra was grated, ground, and boiled to extract coconut oil, a practice deeply embedded in Pacific Island cultures. By the 1860s, it burgeoned into a valuable commercial product in the South Seas and South Asia.

Drying copra can be achieved through sun-drying, smoke curing, or specialized kiln processes. Solar heat drying demands ample space and sunlight. Typically, coconuts are halved, the meat exposed to sunlight, and, after two days, the flesh is removed for completion of the drying process over three to five days.
